Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau. ~200 km, ~6 h.
We start the ride at around 9.30am, well after rush hours. Take the dike road along the Red River to avoid crazy inner city traffic. In reality, it’s simply a straight road to Son Tay (45km). Then turn left at Trung Ha bridge and another river road along Da (Black) River to Hoa Binh. Then the real challenge begins at Cun pass, the entry to Northwest Vietnam.
Once out of the Red River Delta, which brims with traditional farming activity, we pass through limestone monoliths and into foothills populated by Muong people. We head straight at the main range before breaching a high and beautiful forested pass, which descends into the hidden valley of Mai Chau where we spend the night with friends in a traditional Thai stilt house.
The valley of Mai Chau lies between two rivers: the Da River and the Ma River that make it very fertile and rich in varied landscapes, medium mountains, forest, lake, rivers, and infinitude of small footpaths and offer many possibilities of a trek. In the valley of Mai Chau and its surroundings are Muong, White Thai, H’mong (in the height), and the Dao who we meet at the markets or in their villages.
Day 2: Mai Chau – Pu Luong, ~100 km, ~3 h.
If you like an off-road ride (quite hard) then we invite you to try challenging roads to Pu Luong Natural Reserve. It is not very far from Mai Chau but takes long riding hours to get there. This is a chance to see how good your skills with single dirt tracks are.
Pù Luông is a nature reserve in northern Vietnam. This nature reserve is situated in Quan Hoa and Ba Thuoc districts of Thanh Hoa Province, North Central Coast region of Vietnam. Pu Luong Nature Reserve is bordered by Mai Chau, Tan Lac, and Lac Son districts of Hoa Binh Province. The reserve is located along two parallel mountain ridges, that runs from northwest to southeast. It is divided by a central valley, which contains several human settlements and a large agricultural land area. In addition, Pu Luong is endowed with great biodiversity, its flora and fauna are closely associated with the Cuc Phuong National Park 25 km southeast.
Day 3: Pu Luong – Mai Chau – Hanoi. ~220 km, ~6 h.
We leave Pu Luong via Mai Chau and then take the road via Bai Chao to ride back to Hanoi. This is another long riding day but the roads are scenic.
After three days you should be good with crowded traffic. Therefore we return via Highway 6 back to Hanoi via Ha Dong to finish a loop. This is another challenge to see how well you flow of traffic river in one of the world’s craziest.
We end this Mai Chau & Pu Luong ride around 4pm, before rush hours.
